Habitat Mission Values

Upcoming Events/Dates | Birthdays/Dates | Anniversaries
Recently, those going on the Habitat Mission trip to Garrett County met together for fellowship and planning. One of our goals for this meeting was to talk together about our values and purposes in going on this trip. I was impressed with the depth and thoughtfulness of those who gave input to our discussion, both youth and adults. The covenant statement below is the result of our effort. As we undertake this trip in June, I want you to know the character of those who are going and how they see this mission effort.

* * * * * * *

As the Habitat Mission Group of Twinbrook Baptist Church, we approach the mission trip to Garrett County with a number of important and meaningful values:
-the value of all people and the importance of helping others in need
-the realization that we have been blessed and are called to "pay it forward" to others
-the importance of growing in empathy for others and humility with others as we relate to and understand the people we encounter
-a sense of mutual blessing as we give and also receive from those we encounter
-the strength of group relationships and the benefits of working together
-the value of learning work skills and of working physically with our hands
-the essential place of joyful participation in all we do and the spirit of having fun as we do it

Given these fundamental values of our mission team, we covenant to the following:
-we will be responsible and attentive while working on site, particularly with tools. "Safety first" will be our motto
-we will work in mixed age groups, with older and more experienced people working side by side with the younger ones
-we will be respectful at all times on the trip with all the people we encounter
-we will try to leave every place better than we found it
-we will use our resources wisely, not being wasteful or neglectful
-we will seek to honor everyone's voice and perspective on the trip

Recognizing that every task undertaken in faith should have some structures of accountability and focus, while also recognizing that too many rules can kill the spirit of Christ, we embrace these values and agree to these directives as faithful Habitat mission participants.

Congratulations to Amy, who as a junior at Randolph-Macon College, is now a published author.
TBC IS NOW A MEMBER OF THE ALLIANCE OF BAPTISTS

With strong support, the members of TBC have chosen to become a participating church in the Alliance of Baptists! This progressive group of Baptist believers and churches provides a unique voice- with warm gatherings of fellowship, faithful mission opportunities, and an ecumenical spirit of cooperation. For more info. on the Alliance, check out: www.allianceofbaptists.org. The values of the Alliance are closely related to the Covenant of Values which our own church adopted last year. We look forward to the possibilities which this new partnership provides our church.
CMR GALA RESULTS

The efforts of many people came together recently in the CMR Gala in support of community ministries in Rockville. The result was that more than $230,000 was raised in one evening. Thanks to all who participated in different ways from our church. We had 19 people present for the Gala, and our auction items all sold for a good amount. It looks like our part in the evening contributed more than $3000. Our church does not have the size of other churches in the city, nor does it have the money of many of the businesses, but we have been faithful with what we have, and for that we can give thanks to God.

JUNE 14 - LOP GRADUATION

On Thursday, June 14, at 7:00 pm, the students of the Latino Outreach Program will gather at Crusader Lutheran Church for their annual graduation program. As many of you know, LOP classes are held at TBC on Thursday evenings, and they fill almost every room in the church. The learning of English is an important way for many who come to this country to find new possibilities for their lives. And as people of faith, we are called to welcome the stranger in our midst (Deut. 10:18-19, Matthew 25:35). In these days of controversy over immigration policy, it is important for us to remember the purposes of God in our lives and the way we can make a concrete difference in the lives of others. So if you have the opportunity, come and support this event with your presence. There is nothing like seeing the smile of achievement on the face of a graduate.

JUNE 9 - HABITAT CAR WASH

For those of you with dirty cars, there will be a car wash at the church on Sat., June 16, from 9:00 to 2:00. Donations will go toward support of the Habitat Mission Trip. (THE PAPER COPY OF THE NEWSLETTER HAS THIS DATE INCORRECTLY LISTED FOR JUNE 16)
